undergraduate school= education to earn a bachelor degree (BA or BS)

graduate school= education to earn a PhD. or masters

professional school= education to earn doctorate (non-PhD.) example= medicine (MD), pharmacy (Pharm.D.), law (JD)

(sequence to go to these schools= first undergraduate then, depending on what career u want, either graduate or professional...some just stop with undergraduate...possible to just have a professional degree, but that's extremely rare case...example of this is UCR- university of california in riverside. they have an undergraduate program that gives u a spot at UCLA med school...3 years of undergrad- really competitive, no BS/BA given then accepted to UCLA med school.)

Different colleges compose universities. For example, my university has a College of Business, College of Natural Sciences, College of Humanities, College of Engineering, etc. Colleges are schools that are typically defined by the courses they teach and the major they contribute to. A university and/or college could be an undergraduate or graduate school seeing as your undergraduate years are your bachelor's degrees, associate's degree, etc. If you apply to graduate school, you have already completed your undergraduate years and are looking for either a Master's degree or a Ph.D in a particular field or subject. For example: one of my best friends is going to University of Texas this fall as a freshman and will be going into her undergraduate years to work toward a B.S. degree (Bachelor of Science) whereas I have had teachers in the past who have also gone there for their graduate school (Master's degree) in areas such as political science or biology.

The process of getting a degree (i.e. when you've finished the course and get the degree itself) is called graduation. The verb to get a degree is to graduate, so:

An Undergraduate is someone who doesn't have a degree yet but is doing a degree course at University (e.g. Bsc, BA etc).

A Graduate is someone who has a degree (e.g. Bsc Psychology)and is now either starting a top notch career or studying for a higher degree/professional qualification (e.g. Masters, PhD, PGCE-teaching qualification). NB. People who are studying for a Masters etc (called postgraduate degree courses because you need a degree before you can study them) are also called Postgraduate students.

A Postgraduate is someone who has got a degree and a higher degree/professional qualification (e.g. the person might have a Bsc (bachelor of Sciences degree) and a Masters in Psychology). This person is now either ready to enter a profession (e.g. teaching) or do some research in the subject which they got their degree and higher degrees in.

By the way, a person who already has a degree in one subject and is now studying for another one is NOT an undergraduate. he or she is a graduate with a first degree in a subject (e.g. Psychology) studying for a second degree in another (e.g. English). He or she is not a postgraduate either because the second degree is at the same level as their first one (for more information on the levels of different courses, do a web search for the term national qualifications framework).

Hope these definitions are clear to you!

Undergraduate refers to your first degree (Bachelors, I think) and graduate is for the degrees that follow.
