I read where some woman gave birth when she was 60 years old. I was a Gramma at 45. I would not want to have a baby now. At 43 you would be 61 when the child is 18. You would in all likely-hood be the oldest mother at school functions. You might even be an embarrassment to your child, particularly if the other children mistake you for his/her Gramma. If the physical demands do not poise enough challenges for you the other parental duties in all honestly would. Think..."The Old Gray Mare She Ain't What She Used To Be"!

Age is an indicator not a barometer!
If you feel happy to be having a baby at 43, then it certainly isn't.
If you feel that this is something you neither want nor need, then it is.
Starting another human being off on life's amazing adventure is huge! It shouldn't be a regrets thing!
If it is someone you know that is is that situation, you absolutely do NOT have the right to say " What at your age?' or make other sarcastic remarks.

The chances of birth defects and abnormalities do increase after age 40, but there are accurate diagnostic screening tests and amniocentisis to determine if something is wrong. We are living longer, but you do need to think about being in your 50's and tending to a 10, 11, 12 yr old, then in your 60's you'll be dealing with the fabulous teen years....women do it all the time now but there are definitely factors to consider. Good luck!

It's ok if you are in excellent health and understand the risks and know that you may have to decide whether to have an abortion or deliver a downs syndrome baby. The older you are the higher the risks and you need to know that that may be a decision you may face and know that you can live with that. Being in really good health allows women to have babies later and later. So, talk with a medical professional with your mate and make an informed decision. Good Luck whichever way you go!

Only you can decide what is right for you. There are risk, but you will need to look at the family history. At what age did your mother, grand mother ect. go through menopause? early or late? Your physical health as well as your partners. The medical history of the family. I have seen it work out great for some and not so great for others. How old were your parents when you were born? All things to consider.

i know someone at present that is 16 weeks pregnant and she is 42. i think there is nothing wrong with it but her sister did tell me this week that the amnio found that the baby has a urinary tract problem and this can be an indication that it may have downs.
she gets the rest of the results back soon
i think you need to consult a specialist - obviously there are risks but if it is something you really want to do then go ahead.

Many women do it at that age now. Just keep your stress in check, go to the doctor regularly, etc because you're at higher risk for high blood pressure and gestational diabetes. Make sure you're on your multivitamins, keep active, and eat healthy. I hope you're energetic! You'll be running around for the next 20 years chauffeuring your child around! Good luck with the baby!

Honestly, women over 40 have a greatly increased risk of having children with Down's syndrome. It has to do with the increasing fragility of your chromosomes, especially #22, which is responsible for Down's, if I'm not mistaken. It's your choice, but the result may not be what you're hoping for.

No but it is harder to have a child as you don't have as many eggs as you used to when you were 20 yrs old or even 30 years old. Every year it will be harder to conceive as you lose a certain amount of eggs each year.
