If they are Rust stains from Iron in the water or old iron pipes, you're pretty much out of luck.
What I use in my toilet is plain old Vinegar & Baking Soda.
Make a paste of Baking Soda & a little water and spread on the stains. Soak your scrubber in the vinegar, squeeze out just enough so it doesn't drip all over, and scrub the spot.
If that doesn't work, get a BIG bottle (gal. or liter) of vinegar (the cheaper the better) and 2 boxes of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (2 lbs).
Fill the tub with enough warm water to cover the stains. (If the tub is less than half full, you only need half the vinegar & soda.) Sprinkle in the baking soda (don't stir it). Poor in the vinegar. It should start fizzing.
When it stops, or if it doesn't fizz, swish the water around until all the baking soda is desolved. Let it sit for a couple of hours, drain it, except for a couple inches of water to use to finish scrubbing.

I'm wondering what kind of stain you're having problems with. I've had luck with old stains in our plastic tub by just using a soapy Brillo/SOS pad.
Since we use shampoos/soaps to bathe, they will work on the ring around the tub - which is produced by our body oils.
Vinnie is not sure of the spelling, but says check your local hardware store for Myriodic Acid.

First scrub the tub out with comet, rinse it out, fill the tub up with with bleach and water, then let it soak for as long as you can go without taking a bath or a shower.

Go to a janitorial store and buy tub acid. It works very good. A little goes a long way, but always wears gloves when using it.

The best cleaner I have used on soap was Zep shower cleaner! You can purchase it from home depot, just be careful because if you let it sit too long it will eat away the plastic!

Use bleach. Spray the whole tub with bleach and let stay for an hour. Just rinse off with water.
