Ok I started High School a week ago, and love it. I LOVE my school. (obviously, im a freshman) i used to be more introverted, but now i see myself talking to and making friends with people i like. I was wondering: do you think it is moral to be friends with someone out of pity? like there are a few kids who get teased a little about their looks, brains, etc, behind their backs, and i feel bad for them. It feels like if i dont be friends with them, im being a bad person. Please, Im looking for real answers, and i would appreciate any advice. THANX!!!

You sound like a great kid. Here is some advice: Be friends with everyone. That's how to be a really nice person and well liked by all. You never know who you might befriend. Bill Gates was one of those nerdy kids when he was in HS. So was Nicole Kidman. She said that HS was a nightmare for her because she was teased all the time. So, be smart and be nice. Be kind and friendly to everyone. You will never regret it.

I work with children who have behavior problems. I was really moved today when I saw the most popular kid in the class sit next to a child who no one else bothered to talk to - a child who didn't have much. The popular child helped him with a school assignment and then invited him to play football at recess. The other students in class started to treat this unpopular little boy better almost immediately.

If you try to be friends to them out of pity, they might sense that and feel like your friendship isn't genuine. I don't think you should befriend them out of pity. Perhaps be nice to them and look for ways to include the... but I also wouldn't be surprised if you found that after spending some time with them you might genuinely like them... not just out of pity.

Enjoy HS.

no if anything that makes you a better person for seeing the type of person they are on the inside. You'll find that people that judge others and make fun of other people are going to turn out to be not that great of friends.

I have always told my daughters to be sure and be nice to the people that others tease and to remember how you would feel if people treated you that way, would you like it?
Don't befriend them because you feel guilty befriend them because they might be a really good friend someday

I think you are good person to be nice to the down trodden. You don't have to be best buddies, just smile and say hello. You can brighten someone's day just by doing that.
