No. Marriage was not mandatory.
They were one of the "pressure groups" Jesus and his followers had to deal with. The Party followers of Herod, the Essines, and the Saducees were others.

The big difference between the Pharisees and the Saducees was the issue of the resurrection.
The Pharisees believed in the resurrection and the Saducees didn't... that is why they were sad...u...see?

Were Pharisees Married

A Pharisee didn't have to be married; but as a good, traditional, "old-time" religion type....he would have felt it a necessary part of being Jewish...that is to say... a fundamental aspect of his belief was to raise a family, have heirs, pass on the faith to the next generation

Other sects may have been celibate-for particular length of time....like giving up desserts for Lent or meals for Ramadan...
Nazarenes, for one..
Some zealots....took these "vows" for life..[as some research would seem to indicate]....this might give the erroneous idea that Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, as well as others...were not married.
NT makes no difference....
the Pharisee, Sadducees, Essences, and Nazarenes are OT sects....
if they didn't convert to christianity[and obviously, most did not] they would have no reason to discontinue their long standing beliefs-and they didn't

im no expert, but i dont believe so and heres why-

saul/paul was a pharisee before his conversion, yes? now im starting to doubt myself again, but i remember reading that somewhere in the new testament. and i do know for a fact that he was not married (i dont know off hand where the reference is, but i can look it up and get back to you if youd like to know)

he was a pretty hardcore pharisee, so if the rules said that they had to be married, he definitely would have been, but he wasnt, so i guess they didnt :)
