I’m sorry to hear about your difficulty in getting help for your procedure. It might be a case that you just have to find ways to minimize the cost of treatment rather than getting assistance because getting a new health insurance policy to cover your surgery will be difficult. If you do get a new policy that will help you pay for the surgery, you will at the very least have to wait through an exclusionary period first. You might look into state risk pools. These are arrangement where a group of high-risk (uninsurable) people share the collective risk among them. Theoretically it makes getting insurance easier for high-risk people as well as saving money. I’ve included a link to states that have risk pools.

I’ve also included a link to NeedyMeds, which has information on state and federal programs, as well as financial assistance program by disease or condition. I didn’t find anything that looked like it might help, but check it out because you might be able get assistance for medications that you might need after surgery. The final link in the Sources section is to State Insurance Offices. Some states, such as New Jersey for example, have discount health insurance programs for women and children.

An earlier answerer is right about the relative risk of vaginal vs. abdominal surgery. The former requires a higher level of surgical skill than abdominal surgery, so please select your physician carefully. My mother did not have a pleasant experience with vaginal hysterectomy surgery, although I don’t remember the particulars now.

If you do want to talk with local health insurance agents and compare plans without any obligation, check out MostChoice.com.

I hope you get help soon,

I am sorry to hear your having this problem. I doubt if you will find an insurance company that will insure you for this. Most insurances to not cover pre-existing conditions. If you do find one, they usually have a 2 year waiting period for pre-existing conditions. Your best bet would be to try Blue cross/Blue shield. Have you tried going to a free clinic. And if it is an emergency your local welfare office should help you no matter what your husbands income. You can also set up a payment plan with the doctor and hospital. I hope this helps some. Good luck.

DO NOT HAVE A VAGINAL HYSTERECTOMY!!!!!!!!!! Read my story below. Click on this link and read.

My attorney said he has more vaginal hysterectomy cases on his desk than any other malpractice cases. If you HAVE TO HAVE a hyterectomy, have them open up your abdomen. The surgeon has a full view of all of your organs and therefore you have a lot less risk for any complications. Please please take this into consideration. I have heard so many horror stories from vaginal hysterectomy cases since I had mine almost 4 years ago. It has permanently damaged me and I have pain everyday. Please do not have this procedure.
