Salmonellae are members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, including Escherichia species and the closely related species Shigella. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. typhi) has, as opposed to other species of the genus, no animal reservoir. It is strictly a human pathogen and is spread by the fecal-oral route by asymptomatic carriers. After ingestion, the organisms multiply in the small intestine, then invade through the intestinal wall and are carried to the regional lymph nodes. From there they are spread to other organs
