Liberal and conservative are political philosophies. Democrats and Republicans are political parties.

Liberals believe in personal freedoms, lack of government regulation, equal opportunity, and protection of the environment. Most favor government regulation of business to those ends.

Conservatives believe in traditional values, morality, and conformity. They oppose government regulation of business, but favor government regulation of personal conduct and relationships.

Democrats were originally liberal in philosophy, but have largely become just a party that supports big government, high taxes, and heavy government subsidies and social programs.

Republicans were originally conservative in philosophy, but have abandoned the small government model to push their social agendas, and are now just as big-government as the Democrats.

Libertarians are the only significant political party that oppose big government in all forms. Many fiscal conservatives, who oppose govt regulation of business but favor personal accountability have migrated to the Libertarian party, as have many liberals who support the Libertarians strong commitment to personal liberties and personal responsibility.

Conservatives (mainly Republicans) oppose same-sex marriage, on religious grounds. The problem with that is that the Constitution doesn't allow one religion to dictate secular law.

The problem with same-sex marriage being a state issue is that it violates the Full Faith and Credit Clause and the Privilege and Immunities Clause of the Constitution. Because marriage is a legal status, recognized by the courts, it needs to be portable between states. That's the guarantee of Article IV.

So, if some couples can get married, and go to another state and have that marriage be recognized (as opposed to having to get married again), that same process must be extended to everyone. That's the guarantee of the 14th Amendment.
