Incorrect. You can distinguish one object, condition, scenario etc, from another without a sense of self. You can pick up an green ball and an orange ball put them next to one another and ascertain that one ball is orange and the other green. What you really need is perception ie, the ability to see the colour green as opposed to the colour orange.

You can see the world without ever having looked in a mirror.
