It is a "safe" way to exchange money over the web. You can connect it to your own bank account and use that account without having to give out that info to the buyer. It is very convenient especially for eBay.

Paypal is not traditionally for donations. It is a way to exchange money between businesses and customers/clients. If you wanted to collect donations, I would suggest setting up a fund or account at a local bank or credit union.

Paypal is an online banking service that is now owned by EBay. The service allows a person to "push" money to someone in payment for goods or services. This is in contrast to your credit or debit card which "pulls" money out of your account, allowing anyone with your account number to draw money out of your account. In my humble opinion a "push" account is safer and a possibly somewhat more difficult to steal money from you.
