It's never too early. When you sit with an infant and roll a ball back and forth, that is a sport to the child. Try as many as you can as they will improve the childs reflexes, dexterity, hand-eye cordination, etc. The child will let you know what they prefer after awhile. The YMCA has semi-organized team sports that I believe start at the 3-4 year age group.

Kids love sports and just give him/her exposure to all sports. Take him/her to the park and kick a soccer ball around, toss up a spongy baseball and swing a bat.
-Trust me, he/she will take an interest right away. Don't try to impose rules of the sport on kids immediately as they will shy away and become overwhelmed with the strict rules.

I started to play soccer in 3rd grade but whenever the kid seems ready go for it! It's never to young to start teaching them how to play but just don't push the kid too much or they'll hate it. Besides that good luck teaching them I hope they enjoy it as much as i have :)
