I'd only tell that person if it would be beneficial to them.

I would tell it to that person if I'm sure that the secret is true, has a basis, will be useful for the person and will bring out a positive result. Even if it hurts.

This actually just happened to me two weeks ago. A group of 3 girls me and two others are great friends and have been for years. Well (we'll call her) friend A had been talking to this guy and had a fling with him for about 3 months, and we all knew it very clearly. (we'll call her) friend B comes up to me and says guess what? I kissed Joey and we've snuck and went to lunch twice now. Now we all knew very much so that Friend A liked this guy A LOT. So here I am stuck in the middle. Contemplating the same things you probably are. I wanted to tell her so bad but what about my other friend I didn't want to ruin one friendship, but what kind of friend would I be to go on and act like everything was fine. I went to my own boyfriend for advice and he said that it would only be right to tell her because the only one getting hurt and played is friend A. So finally I told her. It made her really sad at first and she cried but then she thanked me over and over again for telling her. Because if i hadn't she'd still be with him and still be clueless. I don't know if this helped you, but I know that after I told her it felt like 30 lbs. of strain was just lifted off of my shoulders. I hope you tell your friend, they deserve to know even if it is hurtful.

If it is something that they really should know then tell them. If it is something that isn't important and doesn't make any difference then don't. Think about it. Is it something that you would want someone to tell you?
If this person is a really good friend and the secret is something they really should know then tell them.

If they would be hurt more by knowing than not knowing then I'd keep it to myself. Suppose I was told that everyone this person work with made fun of them when they weren't there. I wouldn't say anything. If they were laughing at the person because he/she had body odour then I'd tell them, even if it hurt their feelings. Then they could fix the problem.

If the secret is destructive to the person`s personality yet need to be clarfied..why not spill the bean? It`s better to speak the truth than hurting that someone.

Some times it is just best to leave things alone. Telling secrets can only get YOU in trouble.

you have to consider two things:
first, is it something you would rather know if it were you?
second, if you tell that person, will they believe you, or will you just cause trouble and they will go on as before?
if the person really should know and they would belive it, you should tell them, but also remember that sometimes it turns out that people already know (like, they know their husband is cheating, for example) in which case they will not be happy that you brought it to their attention

The operative word is secret, you don't tell. Unless there is a risk of life and limb.
