Yes more and more highrise buildings will be built. If you search the net you'll find that there are maybe 30 buildings over 1000 feet around the world today but right now there are at least that many under construction and in 10 years there'll be around 100. What's happening is also contrary to what most poeple predicted after 9/11, everyone thought that nobody would build tall anymore because of fear but there are more towers being built now than ever before.
By the way, I sense a bit of negativity in your question. If anything, I say build more skyscrapers, bring life back to downtowns and stop building all those sprawl suburbs in the middle of nowhere because that's the type of deveopment that eats up our land. If we build tall and dense then that means less precious land is used up and also it's much easier to get around since you can walk everywhere.
I think eventually when the oil runs out we'll start to see skyscrapers being built en-masse especially in american cities. When gas prices get high enough people will prefer to live in an apartment close to town and use public transport rather than live in a single-family house ages away and having to pay insane prices for using cars to go everywhere. So cities should get taller and denser in the future (but not for a while) and most of the outer suburbs will be abandoned and could likely become the new ghettos.

As the population increases, they all gotta live somewhere. They can build houses on the edge of town, until they live so far away it takes forever to get to work in the morning, they can build houses in vacant lots in town, until all the lots are gone. Eventually there will be enough pressure for homes, that people WILL pay high prices for skyscrapers.
In my home in Phoenix, we have so much cheap desert land that huge new towns such as Verrado & Anthem are being/have been built, 30 miles out of the Phoenix metro area. In 10-20 years, they'll be part of Phoenix metro. Phoenix & Tucson are officially about 120 miles apart. But new Phoenix suburbs are being built about 10 miles from new Tucson suburbs & we'll soon have the Phoenix-Mesa-Tucson metro area.
It's not Republicans or Democrats doing this - it's people having babies. The great threat is population pressure - maybe even more so than global warming.

It is logical for one to assume that due to an ever increasing population, with developments in medicine that have led to longer life spans, that overcrowding in urban areas can only be combated with the construction of mutiple family dwellings. Condos, highrises, etc. There is still plenty of available space for those who like the quiet contryside, but the jobs are in the city so that is where most of us end up.

Republicans support this boom and they don't care about you. Their motto is "build roads and homes and the people and money will follow". Next thing you know there are malls and gasoline stations. Then the airports are expanded, jets are brought in and they have to chop off the tops of trees. Then they bring in car rental places and cheap hotels and your town is destroyed.
