might have to make the work fun for him, find out what he likes most, activity wise then treat him to that upon completion.praise lots of praise. If this fails call nanny 911.she would give him chair time 1 min x their age, then tell him he can get up when he is ready to learn.Explain to him why you need to teach him,why does he need extra help,"because you need to know this stuff so you can survive in the world".

Let him know up front you are the boss. Whatever you do, use positive reinforcement. You attract more flies with honey... You could try a point system. Maybe if he goes a week without being disobedient while you are tutoring, then he can play a game during your tutorial. Find out what he likes and use that to your advantage.

find out what his interests are. interview his parents and see what it is that catches his attention more than anything else. Start there. incorporate whatever it is that he enjoys the most in the world to what you are teaching him. get him interesting reading material (on this subject) that will encourage him to read (more) and learn more on what it is that your objectives are for him. *Gear it towards what it is that you want him to be learning
good luck :D
I don't really agree with the "let him know you're the boss" theory. although I agree with the rest of what *ladybug* said. Don't give him any more reason to want to show you that he can get under your skin. just come into this relationship with an open mind and teach him. no judgements here should be your motto. again, good luck

First of all, what are you going to teach him? I hope it is not writing or grammar because yours is very bad.
Secondly, needing a job is not a good enough reason to teach a child that you can not in your words "bear". That can only lead to trouble and I wouldn't want to be paying you to teach my child just because you need a job.
In order to be a good teacher, you have to know what you're teaching, you have to like to teach and you have to like children and if you don't know how to discipline the child you should not attempt to do so.
Find another job before you hurt this child emotionally and physically. I actually feel physically sick thinking about the scenario you described and scared about what could happen to this child.
Please do find another job, this one is too important to take a chance of screwing up. I think I'm going to have nightmares about this one tonight.

Find something that you and this child have in common, get this child to trust you. He will have much more respect from someone trying to be his friend than someone who is just trying to make him mind. Get to know the child before you go straight into bookwork.

be firm and use the time out technique.
always praise on the positive things he does. and dont give too much attention to the negatives.
remember he is only 10...just a child and may be acting out for a reason...
oh one more thing....always live up to your word...if you say your gonna do...make sure you do

your job to be disobedient someone?!
if so, try to get him attention, then be friend with him.
do your best as a idol in his mind, do everything that he can't do such as trick =P
after that he will notice your behavior and learn from you~
I did it for many child and it's really profitable!
enjoy =)
