Finally something I know at least a little about. My recommendation is to start on your own by reading up on the subject or talking to friends, neighbors or family members who have adopted. Before you even start, I think you should determine if you would like to adopt domestically or internationally.

Long story short, international can be faster but is commonly more expensive and more difficult. Internationally-adopted children will almost certainly be older. It is virtually unheard of to adopt an international child younger than six months old. If you adopt internationally you will have to contend with changing laws in various countries, questionable medical care, and extensive travel.

There are fewer hoops to jump through in domestic adoptions, although it is by far the most time-consuming, frustrating and invasive ordeal I have ever gone through. In most domestic adoptions, the birthmother choses the adoptive parents so it is entirely possible to go through background checks, pay ten of thousands of dollars in fees and then wait for years to be chosen, or not chosen at all.

My wife and I adopted domestically. If we do this again we would almost certainly try domestic again.

Maybe you can call your local Department of Children and Family Services, or whatever it is called in your neighborhood. We went through Adoption Network in Lake Forest California. We have friends who adopted through Lutheran Child and Family Services. We also have family who adopted through Catholic Charities.

Good luck. I can assure you that the time, effort, headaches and money is all worth it!

Well if you can afford the $$$, adoption agencies are the best bet. They'll take care of all the paper work & such. Otherwise, you can spread the word around. It'll definitely cut down on the expenses. But you would have to hire a lawyer to handle the legal aspects. If adopting from foreign country, you need to apply for the passport, dependant's pass etc....& the pass has to be renewed every 3 mths. You have to be prepared to spend loads of time on the adoption process. But at the end of the day, when you hold the baby in your arms, you'll know that it's been worthwhile & you'll do it all again if you had to.

Look in your Yellow Pages under Adoption Agencies. It's hard to adopt a baby. This isn't a project for the weekend........
