Softball is, in many ways, just baseball being played by earlier rules. Technically it's a younger sport (dating to 1882, rather than 1845 like baseball), but as baseball in 1882 was no closer to baseball in 2006 than softball is, one could view both sports as being derived from a common ancestor.
