if your talking of the synthesis then i tell you the process is DIAZOTIZATION......this is a coupling process of highly conjugated compounds which then will result to compound of higher conjugation which then can absorb and reflect light of specific wavelength and thus produces color...we call them dyes and pigments

many dyes are made from plants or animal products. For instance, purple dyes used to come from indigo plants, black from squid ink. Even minerals can be used as dyes, such as cobalt for deep blues. Now however, most dyes are made from synthetic chemicals

well i know that peoples in the resanance era used plants and usually dirt mixed with coloring and oils to make paint.
