Apples have a long history of greasing the wheels of education.

According to aboutapple.com, the juicy fruit is a traditional present for teachers in the United States, Denmark, and Sweden. Some think the practice originated as a simple gift of food for poorly paid teachers. Others believe the good health associated with apples made the present particularly meaningful. And a few even think it's a nice name for a child.

Giving an apple to a teacher is also the origin for the term "apple-polisher," which was first recorded in the late 1920s. Apple-polishers, also referred to as bootlickers or toadies (among other, even worse nicknames), aren't always favorably looked upon by other students.

In other words, apples started to represent teachers and education. They represent the relationship betwenn the teacher and the student, they still give me apples sometimes. I think is cute, and actually I decorated my classroom this year with apples.

Teachers Apple

Once upon a time, students brought shiny red apples to their teachers on the first day of school. Hopefully, the apple would impress the teacher, and the new school year would be off to a successful start.

A twist on the tradition of giving an apple to a teacher is to give a crystal apple award instead. Crystal apples are obviously longer lasting than real apples and because they are made out of crystal, they have a great surface for engraving. With their reflective qualities and smooth surface, crystal apples make a beautiful addition to a teacher's desk.

Crystal Apple Awards Across the Country
Crystal Apple Awards are given away by many prestigious organizations across the country including the American Association of School Librarians, Indiana State Teachers' Association, Time Warner Cable, Purdue University and others. The symbolism of the apple for the teacher makes this type of award popular for honoring excellence in education. A crystal apple is immediately recognized as a sign of an exceptional teacher

you know i have always wondered the same thing. I think it has something to do with back in the old days when kids use to bring an apple for their teachers. Maybe its the saying.... an apple a day keeps the doctors away...and teachers like apples....

They were originally given as gifts to the teach by students - they are a healthy sweet snack that would not get ruined on the trip to school in the book bag. Remember too that early schools were often in rural communities (the summers off so the kids could help with the harvest) and so it would be something families would have to spare, to thank a teacher for her help.

Peace!

Apple - biblical symbol of knowledge, and ironically the item that supposedly gave Newton his epiphany on gravity!

Other fruit wasn't so readily available in the past.Apples however were grown everywhere! In rural America it's common to share fruit and vegetables with friends and relatives while they're still fresh and in season, apples, tomatoes etc.

I couldn't find anything on it. Maybe this became a tradition because it is an inexpensive, healthy way to give a nice gift to one you are fond of, or hoping to impress!!!
