I suggest you look at what is available on Hotwire.com . I always use this site to book rooms. It lets you select area of town and offers better rates than what is publicly avail.
I have used hotels, airfare ect and have never had problems with accomodations or service.
They let you select hotel ratings (2 star, 3 star ect). We have booked 2 stars that have been places such as Holiday Inn Express/ ExtendedStay America for as little as 40$ a night.
Good Luck

If you want to stay REALLY cheap, try a hostel. It's a no-frills kind of hotel that isfavored by young, European travellers. They are popular in Europe and are now beginning to pop up here.
Hostelling International Chicago (http://www.hichicago.org/) is located right downtown near transportation, etc. It's $31 bucks a night and is pretty clean and safe. It's mostly young foreign kids who travel and stay there, and the occasional American who comes to town for Taste of Chicago and wants to stay for three or four days. It's a great way to stay in the city for people who want to spend their money on food, partying, etc., and not on a room that you'll probably only spend a few hours a day in.
The Chicago International Hostel is on the far north side of the city BUT it's right near the major transportation lines so it's easy to get downtown and back. It's near Loyola University's north campus so there are a lot of collegiate kids around. And it's only SEVENTEEN bucks a night!

Recently stayed at the Holiday Inn City Center on E.Ohio. Located between the Miracle Mile and the Navy Pier. Its one street over from Northwestern Medical Center. Ask for any promotional rates offered directly from the hotel.

Well, you probably don't want to spend a lot on lodging since you'll be out and about in our great city LOL!
For a clean room with more than basic amenities at a good price, I would recommend the Fairfield Inn by Marriott.
You can find room for a bit less, but with the F.I. you get free breakfast so that saves you some money right there.
Also, the location is PERFECT and you won't get stuck spending money on cab fare. You can hoof it to all sorts of great places from this location.
You'll get Marriott points as well, so maybe you'll come back to our fair city with them :)
Safe and happy travels!

We stayed at the House of Blues hotel and it was moderately priced. I booked it through http://www.expedia.com and it cost about $80/night at the time. We were within a few blocks of Michigan Ave., so right in the heart of the city.
Have fun!
