there are several factors in answering this. If you can eventually get cable, you will be able to choose different speed/pricing packages. If you can eventually get DSL, the same applies, but DSL speed availabilty will vary depending on your actual physical location. The closer your are to the DSLAM (digital subscriber line asymetrical multiplexer) the faster and stronger signal you will be able to pull. The furher you are, the slower and weaker. Line conditions will also be a factor. If the circut has load coils, pair gains, or bridge taps, it is detrimental to the dsl signal. Keep in mind cable shares bandwidth with the other users on the loop in your area, where dsl you are the only user on that circut, and will have consistant speeds. I hope this helps a little.

Comcast is fast. Earthlink has a plan that is faster than Comcast, but you will have to pay more. Verizon has high speed internet also. Dont know about the quality of Verizon's internet cuz i never had it and i dont know anybody that has used it. (i have AT&T DSL) Comcast is cable internet, and Earthlink, Verizon, AT&T is all DSL. I think its easier to connect the DSL stuff cuz you just need a phone jack (they will provide the modem and stuff). I think Comcast requires a special jack for their modem.
My friend told me that DSL is good enough for surfing the net, email, etc. If you play a lot of high graphic CD games online, then comcast is better.

I know exactly what you mean; I feel your pain! SBC-Yahoo or Comcast. I'm not sure if Earthlink has anything better than dial-up, but I think SBC-Yahoo is a slightly better deal.
