my computer currently has a pentium 4 and I want to upgrade. my motherboard model is Intel D845EPT2 and the chipset is 845E (Brookdale-E) +ICH4. will a pentium D work with this?

Sorry to brake the news, but intel is ditching this venerable mobo for a new make, so your sol on driver updates. For your other question its a resounding no, the highest proc you can upgrade to is a P4 2.80 ghz running a 533 front side bus.

Very unlikely - the 845 was used mostly if not entirely with Socket 478 chips and I don't know any Pentium D chips that came in a socket 478 format.

Contact the motherboard's manufacturer on their website and check it there. Some websites say it's compatible with an upgrade, but just be sure (and not waste your money) it's better to go directly to the manufactuer.

You should check your MoBo for what type of processors it supports. If you want to save $$ then buy a MoBo that supports your old CPU

If you dont know how to check the mobo for what type of processor it will accept you need to stick with fixin sandwiches!
