I say Nas. Although he's from the ghetto but it's not his fault. He's someone who really came from the ghetto and lived it. He went from a street thug to a street educator. All his songs are positive. He never talks about women disrespectfully in his rap's and is a good storyteller in his rhymes. He's a rapper who actually wanted to move out the hood and be a success and show a good example. Nas dropped out of school in eigth grade but taught himself because he read a lot of books. A lot of rappers out now think it's cool staying in the ghetto getting into trouble. You never hear Nas on the news or anything getting into trouble.

I don't think staying out of "trouble" means that a rapper has "common sense", at least, not in ALL cases. Sometimes, it means they're educated just enought to know how to find "loopholes" with the law, or get around the media--remember, whatever you hear about rappers in trouble is through the mass media.

I agree with what you said about Nas. However, the general public LIKES all that disrespectful stuff; that's what sells. >.< It's a shame, really, but that's the type of "general public" we're in.

I have a great respect for the group Public Enemy. They rapped about issues they felt mattered to them and to their general community. They have been labeled "political rap" because they couldn't come up with another name for groups like them who spoke their minds. Yes, a couple of them DID get in some legal trouble, but just because they couldn't get around the law doesn't mean they lacked common sense. Their sense was shown through their music.

Might wanna look at vh1.com for more info.

Hope it helps! ^_^

I would have to go with Tupac for 500. Sure he was from the ghetto but he kept things real. He didn't try and hide the truth from the rest of the world in terms of what he went thru growing up etc. He wasn't a saint but his songs or at least 2 in particular gave me the inclination that he has some sense and those are Dear Mama and Keep Ya Head Up. Most rappers you see come from broken homes raised by a single female. Tupac kept it real telling you what he saw first hand and how he appreciated what his mama and other females go thru raising kids single handed. I have to give Tupac his props for that. -*Keepin my head up*

Sage Francis comes to mind, although he doesnt really rap about positive things, he raps about things that are important, like peace, and politics and respect. He is anti-gangster ******** as well, as the song Gunz Yo shows:

"To the grill,
a homophobic rapper,
tragically unaware the graphic nature of phallic symbols,
suckin' off each other gats and pistols."

Also, a hip hop group from Australia called The Winney Coopers is pretty positive. They rap about things like just kicking out raps instead of getting high:

"I get that feeling,
If I dont get it I'll be sick,
I need hip hop it's my analgesic...."

Chuck D of Public Enemy. He never sold out to Gansta rap and really cares about society and culture. Check out Apoclypse '91 The Enemy Strikes Black. It's one of the best rap albums ever. It kills me so many people waste their time with Biggie and Tupac when the real legend still lives.

I feel y'all. Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Nas is like the best rappers. They speak the truth and don't rap about bulls**t like how low they chain hang, what type of sandwich they eat, or the soup they like and what they drink with it. Out of all of them I think Jay is the best but Nas speaks the most truth.

MC Hammer's first couple of albums were something you would probably like. '2 Legit to Quit', 'Can't Touch This', and 'Pray' would be right up your alley. He tried to go hard core later in his career, and everything he did from that point on stank.

Will Smith's first album (Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince - I'm the Rapper, He's the DJ) has some outright funny stuff on it.
