She can damage or even kill the baby. The baby could be...
-Mentally disabled
-Physically disabled
-Premature
-Addicted to the drug the mother is using from birth
-Stillborn
You need to talk to her about these effects. If she refuses to stop using drugs, I'm afraid you'll have to tell someone of authority. Not only is your friend in danger, but there is another person in danger here. Do NOT let her go through with this, no matter how much you love her. You need to help both of them to get through this, or one (or both) might not make it through. Tell her that drugs are not better than a baby.

My mom was on Heroine while pregnant with me. The doctors said that I would be a basic vegetable. Nothing going on. Thank God, I am a gifted and talented student, can tell you oodles of information, and very accomplished. I am not, however, in the best position concerning my eyesight or fine motor skills. I have a lazy eye and my handwriting is bad. The doctors, when I was born, said I would be dead before I was 3 months old. I was very sick for a long time. So sick I had my own personal nurse for 4 or 5 months of my life. I am very healthy now and am living a great life.
Can't say that for your friend yet. You need to warn her that if she goes on like this, she could kill the baby and herself, or even have a severely damaged baby. To be a good friend, you MUST care enough for her that you keep her from killing herself.
Best of luck and Courage!

The negative side effects are that her baby will take on the same symptoms...especially if she becomes addicted. The baby will be born with the same addiction and will go through withdrawl symptoms at birth. This is horrible to witness. I have written a book that I give out about this matter. www.battlingaddiction.com let me know if you would like one and I will mail you one for free.

For one, the child will be born addicted to whatever she is taking. Sort of like Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and there can be horrific birth defects. Impaired brain development, many things, depending on what all she is taking. Can you elaborate? My fiance is a Dr., and he's quite interested in this.

Legal or illegal. doesn't matter. Your friend must be in very bad situation. She needs help now. everyday counts. YOU may be the only one to speak for the child who can not speak. U must act on this. u already know what to do. if she is under 18. tell her parents. if she is over 18 tell her family and/or someone who loves her more than she loves herself! Turn her in...yes...saving the child is more important than being a snitch!

The baby will suffer terribly...there could be birth defects, mental retardation, detox for a tiny infant is torturous, even death. You need to stop her however you can. Tell her husband, tell her mother, tell her doctor, tell the police. Tell somebody. The baby shouldn't suffer it's whole life or lose it's life because of her stupidity.

The baby can be born with malformation, underweight, heart problems, and i heard that the baby can have a dependency on whatever she is using because all that goes to the baby , and she can have premature birth.
