I have a really great professional relationship with one of my supervisors at work. My problem is, whenever we have any type of after-work gathering, this supervisor does not talk to me, but other coworkers notice him staring at me. I don't understand why he is unable to have a friendly conversation with me - would it be completely unprofessional for me to ask him why? (If not, how could I ask him?) I've worked with him for almost 2 years now, and according to other co-workers, he's always raving about what a great worker I am, but I would like to be able to talk to him about something other than work. Any advice?

Keep it just like it is! If you do anything out of the ordinary you could rock the boat. You wouldn't want to mess up your job situation just because you wanted some "conversation", would you? Be happy that your boss appreciates you and leave it at that. If he approaches you in that capacity, fine. But if you approach him, it could spell disaster!
My suggestion: Look, don't touch!

HE is being responsible and doesn't want to ruin his relationship with you.He is your supervisor remember that and don't mix business with pleasure.your better off talking personal stuff to your coworkers. Unlike my supervisor who is awesome he was no so responsible at one of our party's and some people have less respect for him .He got drunk , drove drunk hit on people including a female supervisor he works with he swore at people then try ed to make us all feel like we did something wrong at work when he was a n idiot, You best go slow with this supervisor he respects u and u should be happy about that. Go up and approach him but don't take It too far like don't flirt or u may end up losing respect and you job.

Hes trying to do the right thing. Let him.
Seems like he may like you so hes being a responsible supervisor by controlling himself even if it means not talking to you about anything other than work.

perhaps he likes you but doesn't know how to deal with it coz he is your supervisor and all. you can try being more friendly to him (not in a flirty way) so that he'll feel comfortable when you're around.
