Before re-installing your operating system, scan your computer using Ewido Anti-Spyware. It works very well and it's free for 30 days. You can always uninstall it afterwards. If the problem persists, back up your important information and do an operating system re-install.

After you have killed explorer.exe, try starting it again. Just like you start other apps, you can start explorer.exe again and get your normal GUI back. Next time you have a lock up, even if it's on next boot, before you kill explorer.exe here is what to look for. In the processes tab you have two columns to look at. One says CPU and one says Mem Usage. Click on those words and it will sort your list by whatever you click. Basically you need to check while the system is locked and see what item or items are taking the most CPU (usually you'll see one thing running 100% CPU. Also sort the list by Mem Usage and check and see if anything is taking what appears to be a ton of memory. More than likely you'll see something using high CPU usage and that's you're actual problem, not explorer.exe.

If it is not a RAM problem, reinstall Windows XP. Chances are when you uninstalled some softwares, you deleted more files than you need.
