I have a really great professional relationship with one of my supervisors at work. My problem is, whenever we have any type of after-work gathering, this supervisor does not talk to me, but other coworkers notice him staring at me. I don't understand why he is unable to have a friendly conversation with me - would it be completely unprofessional for me to ask him why? (If not, how could I ask him?) I've worked with him for almost 2 years now, and according to other co-workers, he's always raving about what a great worker I am, but I would like to be able to talk to him about something other than work. Any advice?

He probably has a thing for you and feels it might show in a social situation. He also may be concerned it may look like favoritism if he is chummy with you outside of work. If he is staying away or avoiding you in that way, it's probably for a reason that's apparent to him and not to you. Try to keep it professional. That'll benefit you the most.

Your supervisor would not want to have any personal feeling or dealing to you beside work is perfectly normal.

There may be a conflict of interest or maybe he will be accused of siding you.

Maybe one day you leave the company he can be a good friend of yours.

He's afraid of being accused of sexual harassment. If he gets too friendly with someone he supervises, he can lose his job and career over accusations of sexual harassment.
