I use this baait inside and outdoors.
Recipe:
1 part 20 Mule Team Borax or Boric acid
9 parts of a sweet sticky liquid like maple syrup, honey or Karo syrup
Mix the ingredients. Heating in a double boiler may speed the process. Take an empty margarine tub and poke 4 holes around the bottom edge (entry holes for ants to walk in).
Place a dollop the size of a quarter in the middle of the tub, then put the top back on. This mixture is not non-toxic, however it is less toxic, and that's the key to its success.
The ants carry it back to the nest where they feed it to the entire colony and wipe out the nest.

First, go all around the house on the foundation with dish washing soap. Then take garlic cloves, cut them up and lay them on the ground all around the house. This will keep them from coming into the house. If you have any dead wood lying around, get rid of it because your big ants sound like termite ants. If that doesn't work, call an exterminator.

No real offense, but I am baffled by the number of Q's here that ask or insist on getting rid of a creature who is in THEIR natural environment,,,sigh.
Certainly if they are fire ants and/or carpenter ants, that's a problem,,, But gee, I see so much of this, I truly don't get it. We are in their space as much as they are in ours.

You can sprinkle raw grits around your house or around the ant hill. Of course, if you find the anthill, it's best to burn it.
