I have long thick hair down to my waist! I need a way to make a bun that won't fall out during my dance classes. Any ideas?

That is exactly the kind of hair I had when I was younger. Now I do my bun but my hair is much shorter. My hair is abnormally think and was over 3 ft long. The way I learned to tie my bun is great and almost always fool-proof and bullet-proof (just kidding). OK he res what you do. I learned it at a ballet school in Tulsa. It is crucial to comb and wet the hair before. Smooth a ponytail at fullest point of the crown of your head.Don't use a loos band, use a new one every time for best results. Twist your hair tightly into a kind of a rope like shape. Hold the shape of the bun and cover it with a see through hairnet and elastic bands. make sure bun is flat against the head. If it looks like a doorknob its to tight. Pin the bun with bobby pins. If you want you can spray hair with hairspray and smooth down your frizzes. Hope I helped!

Try making a pony tail with good strong elastic. Twist your ponytail like a rope. Wrap your pony tail around the elastic once (yes, you still have a big portion of it hanging, I know) secure with hairpins (read below if you need to know how). Wrap it again, secure with pins, do however many turns arounds it takes. Secure with hairpins again. Now the important part: hair net with elastic. You can buy them at the drug stores. Use it the same way as elastic. It covers the whole bun preventing strands from coming out and messing it all up. Hair net looks pretty aesthetic - competitive dancers use them all the time to make the bun look neat and stay put. Oh yeah, the hair pins - you should be using long hair pins, like 3" long. Some beauty stores carry them, and probaly some hair salones. Short pins commonly sold at drugstores won't don the trick. Insert the pin from outside towards the elastic that's holding the hair in the ponitail. The first set of pins should reach the elastic, or it won't do the job. This will hold very strong for dance practices. You can add extra hold with a hair gel. Apply hair gel afer combing. Comb again. Smooth it out with your hands. Then do the bun. Add hairspray on top of all that, it will make it hard as wood. It sounds like an overkill, but this is what I do for competitions. Not only it is foll-proof, it is collision-proof. To take it all apart, you'll need warm shower. :-)

If you know anyone that's in the military there's a way they put their hair in buns using a sock. Ask them to show you.
I used to have thick wavy hair that was down to mid-back. I bought something for buns made by scünci from wal-mart for 3 or 4 bucks that held it in and looked nice even while running.

I have the same length hair. You simply twist it around in a circle around a ponytail that is secured with a rubber band or something and then with another rubberband you go around and around it but when you get to the last 'round' you end it by crossing over the length of the bun and NOT underneath it near the other rubberband.

heres what i do

-put it in a ponytail
-braid it
-hairspray the braid all over
-twist the braid around the ponytail and secure with a lot of bobbypins
-put a hairnet over it, then hair spray the whole bun... again
-then use a decorative hair net, like a knitted one and bobby pin it down
hairspray the whole thing all over again =]

my hair sounds like yours and it totally works for me. it sounds like a lot but its not that much trouble once you learn how to braid behind your head... hehe good luck with that.............
