You better check on yahoo! search on franchising for a comprehensive information. Basically, it's just buying into or partnering with a well established business outfit wherein you don't have to learn your way through putting up your own business. When you become a Franchisee, with the franchise fee, royalty fee (percentage of your income) you will pay and other terms and conditions that you will follow, all the business support that you will need will be provided by the Franchiser. All you have to do is to work hard on the game of the business you got into. Your success is almost assured if you follow the business system you bought for yourself.

It varies, but generally, the Franchise system works by selling you the rights to use the name in your area.
Most will give you a business plan, supported advertising, exclusive products (which you MUST buy from them), and in many cases consulting services.
Many also have requirements for a building to their specifications, Franchise signage, etc.
