But how long will I need to drive it after the jump to get the battery properly charged? (It's about a year old.)

Depends on how badly it was drained and how powerful your alternator is. If it was drained to where you couldn't start it, the battery has probably suffered permanent damage and will never recover fully. Yes, it will work okay after a charge, but when you really need it, it may not have the power to deliver. Most alternators nowadays are powerful enough to charge a battery to about 80% in less than an hour. Two hours should be plenty. But realize that a severely discharged battery has lost about half it's potential power even when fully charged afterward (not voltage... power, the ability to deliver peak voltage and amperage over a period of time).

I think less than an hour will charge it up enough to start again in the morning. You should have a light or gauge that shows how much the battery is charging. But to get get it fully charged, a few hours. You can take it to Autozone or Murrays for a charge, or get a "trickle charger" that you plug in and it charges your battery overnight. That would be a good investment. Inexpensive and you'll use it for all kinds of things. Lawn mowers, motorcycles..anything with a battery. Good luck.

you,ll need to drive it around 40 miles to put a descent charge back in it,,it would be cheaper to hook it up to a battery charger and just give it a good charge,,one day charge will put it back like new again,,that is if you don't need to use it for a while,,just be care full,,if it don't charge back up good it may leave you stranded some where,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.

piss on auto zone. you should have a fairly high output alternator charge time on a good battery shouldn't be long maybe 10-20 minutes

i would just hook the battery up to a charger, take it to auto zone they do it for free and it only takes about a hour, that puts alot of strain on your alternator to keep the car running and charge the battery from dead

it is recommended that you put the battery on a charger nad bring it to a full charge level. that way you dont put undo stress and abuse on the altinator/charging system.but if you insist on driving it to charge it i would recommend 1-2 hrs
