Concerning an earlier response.

You don't have to file a tax return.

You do however have to pay taxes.

The actual answer you are looking for is what is called a "legal fiction" which is a law the Judge makes up based on the evidence when the judge feels that the case falls in a crack and that justice demands that he/she must create a precedent to cover the situation. It is very similar to contempt of court in the fact that it is not specified what the offense may be until the judge pronounces that it is a crime.

By the legal definition of the words no.

In fact, just breaking any old law isn't enought. To be a crime, it must break a law that carries criminal penalties.

But if by "crime" you mean anything bad or unpleasant, then obviously legal definitions don't matter.

I heard it claimed there is no actual law that compels filing a tax return, yet people have gone to jail for failing to do so. ...don't know if that's actually true or not.
