A model should keep her face as clean as possible, as long as you have a great complexion, you dont need makeup (lip balm/gloss is fine though) Leave the makeup to the makeup artists. Its quite a hassel for the makeup artists to remove your makeup before applying it themselves. So I would spend more money on lotions, creams, cleansers, and toners for your skin instead of makeup.

I don't know any websites and books on it, but here are some tried and true tips:
1. ALWAYS start with clean face and hands. This helps prevent infections. Acne and blackheads can crop up or get worse when wearing makeup. Always use a very light hand when touching your face.
2. Buy the right tools for applying makeup. Your local grocery store or drug store should sell makeup, but I suggest you try to get products either from a health food store, or from a salon because the quality will be better for your skin. You can buy brush kits with the correct brushes. AlWAYs keep your makeup brushes clean to prevent infections.
3. Always apply makeup in natural light. If you don't have a window in the bathroom, apply makeup in your bedroom in front of a window. You want it to look natural in daylight.
4. Choose a foundation color that matches your skin tones. If its too pink or dark, you'll look like you're wearing a mask and you'll have makeup lines around your face and neck because the colors won't blend well with your own skin tones.
5. When applying foundation, always buy makeup sponges. Dampen the sponge under lukewarm water, then apply the foundation to the sponge. Dot your face with the sponge, and PAT the foundation on, NEVER RUB. Rubbing clogs your pores and can create a streaked mask effect. You want your foundation to cover flaws by blending them into an even skin tone all over your face. Buy liquid foundation a few shades lighter than your skin tone for patting onto blemishes and under eyes if needed, then apply your regular foundation on your face.
6. Use a neutral colored powder on top of your foundation. Most nonpowder rouges and blushes don't blend well unless your skin is totally flawless and you're an expert in applying them. Powder blush is more forgiving. Choose a color that flatters your skin tone. Most models wear makeup that looks barely there. Be sure to choose blush that is not too light or too dark for your skin tone. Use a light hand - it's easy to go darker if you need to, but you can't go lighter... you'll need to wash it off and start again if you apply too much blush.
7. Keep a spray bottle of mild skin toner on hand and when you're finished applying makup, spray a fine mist of toner all over your face. It "sets" the powder and creates a more natural look.
8. Always, no matter how tired you are, remove your makeup before going to bed. If you don't, theres a good chance you'll have acne and blackheads within a week. There are great makeup removers out there. For most, choosing the right products are trial and error. Don't leave heavy removers and cream on your face. Always use a soft washcloth and warm water to remove makeup. Always apply creams, lotions and removers using an upward stroke on your face. Facial skin is delicate and you don't want to pull down on it causing it to prematurely sag.
9. Allow yourself at least a half hour to an hour when you first start applying makeup so you don't stress yourself out by running short of time. You may need to wash it off and start again. Makeup will permanently stain cloth, but using white cloths means you can bleach them without fading. They should always be sterilized by laundering in hot water and drying on high/hot.
Applying makeup is an art and you should use a light hand. Many makeups are harsh and can cause an allergic reaction, so be careful to choose good products. Use unscented, hypo-allergenic products when you can to prevent skin reactions. If you notice any itching, itchy red bumps, or swelling of your face or eyes, wash the makeup off right away because you're having an allergic reaction. Health food stores often have good quality makeup without the harsh chemicals and metals so check it out.

One of the best ways to learn to apply make up is to copy from magazines, practice and play. Also Kevin Aucoin's book "Making Faces" is awsome. You can get free makeovers at Dept. and beauty stores, what what they are doing, go home and copy it (you don't have to buy anything if you don't want to).
