Find the 'used' outlet in yer neighborhood to familiarize yersef wid da technoglogy fer awhile n den you're sure to be able to find the kinds of features you'll want later for a more customized set of preferences. There are usually 'used'/'reconditioned'/'pre-owned' laptop listings in local classifieds & don't ferget some great chances at retail outlets 'service departments'! Go to several storefront computer retailers to shop around for the 'best' values. Be sure to tell sales yer only interested in the basic web surfing features.

As Internet surfing needs akmost no computer resources, you can go with the cheapest one you can find. Be sure you get a build in wireless card (or there is no point in getting a laptop - buy a desktop instead). You will also need to buy a wireless router and subscript to a high speed Internet service (such as DSL or cable Internet).

Go on ebay if you want and for under $300 you can pick up an awesome machine for your needs and more. It is the Compaq Presario US700 or higher model depending on what you can get it at on auction. It's a great, perfectly sized, nice machine with a 1 to 1.2 ghz processor, card bus slot, lan ports, etc. Built in everything. Take a look.

PC all the way. Some PCs come with wireless enabled internet connections out of the box. Most Apples need an extra wireless card that costs extra money.

If you plan to just surf the net then any company's basic package should do. Just make sure you STAY AWAY FROM DIAL-UP!

Check out the specials at Dell.com or call them.... it's the processor that makes it fast or slow.. tell them what you want and they will direct you... the celeron is a slower processor than the Pentium 4. You get what you pay for.... ( hic )
