I have privacy trellaces in my backyard, and the ivy vines seem to get really out of hand. I was wondering what other kinds of plants can grow on trellaces and provide a little bit of privacy. I don't need to be "full coverage", but needs to be relatively low maintenance. Right now we have to trim the ivy every week, to prevent it from groling in the gutters and on the side of the house. I heard that some types of roses might be good for this. Please let me know what others have done or what you know about this kind of plant or other types of plant that can grow on trellaces.

I would not suggest morning glory they go crazy and take over things & end up killing them. But climbing hydreangas are very pretty and nice. Roses are good if you don't want anyone climbing the trellace ( if it is by a window ) and honeysuckle if it has partial sun and also clematic have big beautiful flowers in a variety of colors. It really depends on where you live, what the conditions of the area are (sun/shade and such).
I would go to a local garden center and ask for suggestions.
For sunny locations, you could try Morning Glory (from seed in the spring) or Clematis (a perennial). The Clematis like to keep the base of the plant shaded, so you could put iris or something like that planted around the base of the plant.
There are climbing roses, but roses need quite a bit of care. Sweet Pea plants vine too, I think.

Give roses a try, they have quite a few varities that will
climb a trellacs but may need a little tieing off to make
them go the way you want them to. I would try the rose
"Blaze,it gives quite a display in early summer and will be back the next year.

just a suggestion, try mixing all the suggestions previously given.the climbing rose, trumpet vine, jasmin, honeysuckle, morning glory etc. as some of them flower at different times and doing this you'll have pretty colors through out the year

Hummingbird vines(trumpet) they flower they grow to about 20' or more, chinese wisteria, they bloom as well, but if you have children or pets they are very poisonous, they are very resiliant though.sweetpeas,Bittersweet is low maintenance as well as Honeysuckle
