Welfare is a program intended to help people who don't have the means to support themselves. Unfortunately it is heavily abused by people who just choose not to work.
Some people on welfare are single mothers who don't have the education or skills to make enough money to support their families. Some people have a legitimate need to be on the program, but it seems the government does a poor job deciding who really needs it and who should just get off their a$ses and get a job.
The main problem with welfare is the way it is structured. If you are on welfare in most states, it is not in your best interest to get a job. In Pennsylvania (where I live), if you get a job while you are on welfare, they will reduce your benefits so that the net effect is having most of the money you earn taken away. If you work for $5 an hour, in reality you will only get to keep a little more than $1 an hour (before they take taxes out). The system is designed to keep people permanently on it, rather than help them become self-reliant.

Welfare has become a very dirty word. The program was originally started to help low income or no income persons live. The majority of help went to AFDC, woman with kids, or men I guess. How did a system that is suppose to aid people become a system that we frown on? Big Government errors, the system that was suppose to help, became a system of repression and many times followed the family chain, in other words kids on welfare grew up to have kids on welfare. The whole deal would take more time to explain than either of us has. Recently[last 5 years or so] the system started making changes...good changes.
programs that encourage growth and roads to financial security.
Where as the original programs were self defeating and created a role of life long dependency.

That when the government helps (you) or the family. Especially if you don't have one of the parent living with you. I mean you because if u are pregnant you can get like a type of help to buy food, and you can get to pay a low monthly payment on an apartment. When you are a low income, that is how you get on welfare.

Welfare : aid in the form of money or necessities for those in need ,an agency or program through which such aid is distributed. People that are on it are mostly low income households.
