i drank coffee, and tea when i was breast feeding. if you do the best time to do it would be in the morning. some babies get cranky or kinda colicky with caffeine. but if you drink it in the morning you have all day to deal with it vs at night when you are trying to sleep. keep it moderate and if the baby shows signs of crankiness then give it time. they will adjust to it. my daughter got gassy and a little cranky sometimes. things to comfort the belly is to rub it while giving slight pressure as to squeeze the air down and out. or another thing to do is to get up about an hour or two before the baby does and pump then have your coffee. when baby wakes give him/her the bottle with breast milk in it. when it is time for the next feeding the caffeine will either be gone out of your milk or down to a low.
congrats on the baby. and good luck.

They are aways finding out new things that aren't good for us even though it has been done for years. Look at George Burns do you think that his mother was asking if she should give up coffee completely? George lived to be how old? Just remember this now that you are a breast feeding mother. Every thing that you take into your body will go into that babies. Soooo if you find that if you eat certain foods they may not agree with the baby. Watch the babies bowel movements and if the baby gets to much gas and lay off those foods for a while. Good Luck

Very small amounts of caffeine get into your breasmilk... so it's totally fine!!! Don't drink gallons of something with caffeine in it, but a cup or two of coffee a day is totally fine.
Congrats on the breastfeeding. It's the best thing you can do for your child at this age. Keep up the great work, mom!

Anything you take in can be passed to the infant, but usually in very scant amounts. The one problem with caffeine is that it can cause stomach upset if taken in large amounts. An infant can also be jittery and sleep poorly. But this is in rare cases. I would say drink caffeine in moderation. If you see problems with your child decrease the amount. It can also cause the mild supply to decrease. So make sure for every cup of coffee you drink you also drink a glass of water or juice. Remember coffee is not the only thing with caffeine. Chocolate, tea, cola and certain medications like Excedrin all these have caffeine in them. If in doubt talk to your infants doctor.

I drank coffee everyday while I breastfeed. It didn't seem to have any effect on my son at all. But I did notice that when I drank red kool-aid , my milk would be kinda pink, LOL. I never asked anyone why it did it, but I thought it was pretty weird. I wouldn't worry, imagine how edgy you would be without coffee, if you're like me you would be going nuts. So keep your sanitiy and do whatever you want to.

Caffeine accumulates in a babies system in more concentrated amounts than for adults... You can drink caffeine, but it will affect your infant's sleep and mood.
Fact: Caffeine that would leave our system in 5 hours takes 96 hours to process in a newborn, 14 hours to process in a 3-5 month old.
Any caffeine you take in can be passed to your baby... Shamicka up there is right, let the drug leave your system before you nurse again.

Moderation is key, I had to keep from smoking while preggers so I turned to caffine for help with this, I actually drank quite alot of it while pregnant, and nursing, It had absolutly no effect on my kids at all! They are very cal and relaxed, but active and they dont have any health issues at all. Congrats and good luck

DO NOT DRINK COFFEE while breastfeeding!!! But I will let you on a little secret, if you're going to drink coffee, drink once a week. But the day that you drink the coffee, let it run out of your system at least 5-7 hours before feeding. I had the same problem as well, especially when it came to soda.

Even though you drank coffee during your pregnancy and you were okay, breast feeding is a whole other story. And everything you consume does go to the baby....So I'm not sure. Why not ask a doctor....and I don't think the baby needs to be drinking milk that's gonna make he or she hyper....

If you listened to everything you are not "supposed" to drink while pregnant or breastfeeding, slowly you would not be able to eat anything. Coffee should be ok. Just dont go drinking pots and pots of it. If your body is used to it before then you will be ok. The rule of thumb my doctor told me is if there are no age restrictions to buy it, or if you won't go to jail if a cops see's you with it, its ok!
