I have a 1972 dodge gravel truck with a 361 v 8 engine the model of the truck could be a 600, 700, or 800 heavy duty single axle I have it running after 10 years but it runs rough and backfires through the carb and will not take its gas without babying it I have had it up to 3000 rpm but somewhat rough need help Thanks

Probably NOT the firing order. More than likely the accelerator pump or the vacuum advance control is MIA.
With the engine off, remove the air filter and place the choke in the "Open" or odd position.
Look down the air horn, and stroke the throttle linkage all the way open. Did you see two full and robust jets of fuel, one on each side? If not, repair this first. Either rebuild the carburetor, replace the accelerator pump or exchange the carburetor with a QUALITY unit. If you go "discount" here, you may well replace it 4 or 5 times before you get a good one.
If the fuel is there, then check the vacuum advance unit. Be sure that it works, and that the diaphragm isn't ruptured or deteriorated, and that the breaker plate is secure.
One other thing particular to Dodge, If it has a conventional distributor (i.e. points instead of electronic) be certain that the dwell is 30-33 deg. at 1200 RPM.
