Genital HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Human papillomavirus is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted, and they can infect the genital area of men and women including the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside the vagina), or anus, and the linings of the vagina, cervix, or rectum. Most people who become infected with HPV will not have any symptoms and will clear the infection on their own.

Some of these viruses are called "high-risk" types, and may cause abnormal Pap tests. They may also lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis. Others are called "low-risk" types, and they may cause mild Pap test abnormalities or genital warts. Genital warts are single or multiple growths or bumps that appear in the genital area, and sometimes are cauliflower shaped.

HPV or Human Papilloma Virus is an STD (sexually transmitted disease) but it is also a virus. In other words you could say that HPV is a sexually transmitted virus. HPV can be transmitted from human to human just like a cold virus but you cannot just "catch" HPV without sexual activity. There are usually no symptoms of HPV infection.

There are several types of HPV and certain types have been proven to cause some types of cervical cancer in women/girls.

To be safe, you should always use a condom when having sex. There is or will soon be a vaccine available to help prevent the HPV in girls but for maximum effectiveness the vaccine needs to be administered before sexual activity begins.

HPV stands for "human papilloma virus", which is certainly transmitted through sex. There are lots of different forms of HPV, some which really don't do very much, and others which are known to increase the chance of cervical cancer. In men, it doesn't bother them, so there's no way to really know if the guy has it. You should make sure you get your Pap smear regularly to protect yourself.

On the side, a cold is caused by a virus attacking you, and is not "formed yourself". You catch it in the air from other people, or from contact with other people. Contrary to the old wives' tale, you can't get a cold from just standing out in the rain. You actually need to pick up the virus.

While colds are picked up from air or touch, STD (sexually-transmitted disease) are transmitted by contact with genitals, i.e., sex.

HPV is a virus. You can't just 'form' a virus yourself. HPV has many different strains or forms. Most HPV strains are harmless while a few strains will cause genital warts or cervical cancer.

It is an std that is contracted through skin to skin contact. You do not need to worry if your partner has warts on his hands or feet. You can get HPV while using condoms so, it's a good idea to get the vaccine and get regular pap smears. PAP smears check for abnormal cervical cells caused by HPV.

It's a virus you catch from others. It's an STD but it can also be caught other ways (on the feet, HPV causes plantar's warts-- on the cervix it can cause cancer and other problems-- on the genitals it causes genital warts).

So HPV can affect your body differently depending on where you catch it.
