First substitute the 3x for y in your first equation.
x+4=3x-2
Now subtract x from both sides.
4= 2x-2
Now add 2 to both sides.
6=2x
Now divide both sides by 2
3=x
Now look at your second equation and substitute in 3 for x.
y=3+3+3
Now solve
y=9
I teach math and I can assure you these answers are correct.

This is the right answer
x+4=x+x+x-2
x+4=3x-2
3x-x = 4 +2 you are collecting like terms
2x/2 = 6/2
x=3

since y = 3x then
y = 3(3)
y=9

there x= 3 and y =9

x+4=x+x+x-2
x+4=3x-2
4=2x-2
6=2x
x=3

y=x+x+x
y= 3+3+3
y=9

2006-09-15 15:05:06 · answer #3 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

y=x+x+x
y=3x

x+4=y-2
substitute y=3x into above
x+4=3x-2
group like terms
2+4=3x-x
2x=6
x=3

y=3x
y=3 times 3
y=9

therefore, x=3, y=9

x+4=y-2
x=y-2-4
x=y-6

substitute into #2
y = x+x+x
y=3x
y=3(y-6)
y=3y-18
2y=18
y=9
substitute into either
x=3

consider eq.2 .y =3x put in eq 1.
x+4 = 3x-2
4-2 = 3x -x
2x =2
x=1 now put x=1 in y=3x
hence x=1 and y=3.

so, u would solve the first eq first
x+4=y-2 (minus four from both side)
x=y-6
Then, sub. the x value for the eq, y=x+x+x
y=(y-6) + (y-6) + (y-6)
y=3y - 18 (minus 3y from both side)
-2y = -18
y=9
sub. this value for y=x+x+x
9=3x
x=3

hmm.......
it's easy!!
x=y-6
subsitute y.
x=1x+1x+1x-6
when u add 3 x u get 3x.
so it's like this.
x=3x-6
then subtract 3x from both sides.
it'll equal to -2x=-6.
then divide-2 to both sides. then u get x by itself on one side and on the other side u get 3.
so x is equal to 3.

then let's subsitute 3.
3+4=y-2
7=y-2
then add 2 to both sides.
then y is equal to 9.

bingo!!

x=3 , y= 9
