Remember all the math you learned in elementary school? Algebra is basically all of that, backwards. You used to find 3 * 4 + 7. In algebra you solve 3x + 7 = 19.

Remember the order of operations? Parentheses, exponents, multiplication & division, and addition & subtraction. In algebra, the order and the operation are reversed so that the whole equation is "undone", so to speak. For example, the previous equation, 3x + 7 = 19. First we subtract 7 from both sides: 3x + 7 - 7 = 19 - 7, or 3x = 12. Next we divide both sides by 3: 3x/3 = 12/3. Thus we find x = 4.

Remember that every operation that you perform must be performed on both sides of the equation. 3x/3 = 12 doesn't work.

Algebra on the whole is far beyond the scope of this web service, but this should be a start.
