I'm in accapella choir, and I have tryouts for district tomorrow, and I was wondering what I could do to keep that gunk off of my throat in the morning, and also, what can I eat for breakfast in the morning that won't affect my voice at all? Oh, and just for a little extra... these are the songs I will be singing. If you know any of these, please give me a few tips... "Listen to a Jubilant Song", The Darkling Thrush", and "O Schöne Nacht". Btw, I'm a Baritone.

Avoid dairy products - they tend to coat the throat. Fruit juices are good - the acid content helps clear the throat. Hot tea is good, as well,

If you have the chance, just before you sing, place the knuckles of your first & middle fingers just inside your mouth, between your upper & lower teeth. Then try to say "my old man eats beans" 3 or 4 times as clearly as you can. It excercises the tongue and jaw muscles and improves your diction & word clarity. A music teacher gave me this tip many years ago and it really works - try it!

When I think my throat may be effected I go by vitamin c drops by halls and start keeping them in my mouth at all times (you can never have enough vita c it leaves your system and you have to replenish) I also try lemons or lemon juice before singing.

Those are a few suggestions...
As far as to eat I wouldn't eat any scatchy cereral that might iritate your throat.

have an orange for breakfast, or two, gargle with warm water. If you can't get to water just before your turn, suck a lemon, cuts the phlegm. Vocalize a lot, humming, doing scales,
