If I ever need to know an answer to the "best value for money" product, I normally quietly ask the youngest sales rep in a large store which one he has got or would prefer.
I almost guarantee if you went into PC World, Curry's or Comet the answer would be a Toshiba (probably a Satellite model) they are incredibly reliable and easy to update.

I've got an elderly Dell Latitude C-series from 1999, and it has been faultless. The battery is a little tired, but that's only to be expected after 6 years use. I also run 2 Dell desktops, and they have also been faultless.

........Toshiba and Sony. Just one tip, if buying Japaese, make sure they are made in Japan and not China. One made in Japan will last a lifetime. Good luck

HP is really good.
Another great one is Sony(especially the Vaio)
Get either sony or HP, most others are crappy and don't last long.
