I think that is to retard the ripening process. You need bright light or sun to ripen them. When growing your own an you have some left at the end of the season, pull up the plant leaving the tomatoes on the vine. Get rid of the stems with no fruit on them.
Lay the plants on a newspaper on your floor like a basement utility room or garage if it isn't too cold and they will last longer while they ripen. I've done it and it works. You will have tomatoes much longer than your neighbors. They will be jealous.

About 10 days if they are at 70º T, and if they were picked at least at green mature stage, if they had some color when they were picked maybe 5 days...add a ripe banana to the paper bag that will help a lot......they don´t need light necessarily to ripe when they are off the vine......ripening process is more related to temperature and ethylene concentration (which the same fruit will expel, that´s why the paper bag and the banana).....if you picked them inmature green.....they´ll never turn red!!!.....if you are lucky yellow!!!....good luck

you're in a position to wish to first wrap them in newspaper and then positioned them in a brown paper bag. it is going to take a good 2-4 weeks for them to ripen, relying on the size. do not save starting up the bag and checking on them. you'll set loose the gases mandatory for the ripening technique. i have were given used this gadget before and it fairly works.
