I have a 2004 Nissan Altima that will jerk back and forth before cutting off altogehter. The brake light comes on and sometimes it takes about four or five tries to turn the car back on.

Go to MSN autos and check for any recalls for your vehicle year and model.

You might start by pulling the codes from the computer, and see if there are any there that you could use to correct the problem. Sometimes you get problems that don't show up on the computer. A bad Ignition control module would do that. Could be a sticking EGR valve. A bad coil or losing fuel supply would do this. It is hard to tell without you bringing the car in for a check up, and maybe a tune up. If you want to drive to North Carolina I would be happy to take a look at it, and see what the problem is. I'm not trying to be funny, but do take it to a mechanic ASAP before you are walking. Good Luck!

if the brake light comes on the problem may be tied in with the alternator circuit. nissan incorporated the brake light to come on when the alternator went bad. there is probably more than one problem.
have you checked for trouble codes??

1st of all when u start the car, turn everything off, no radio no ac and no fan nothing. then let go of the brakes, see if that works. If that doesn't then replace your alternator and your starter. Also check if there's any oil leaking in your spark plugs, that could be another solution. (do check the oil pressure, if its a dark color then change it)

Return to the dealer some time the crankshaft posistion sensor causes the failure you describe. Most of the time it is still covered by powertrain warranty or your extended warranty.
