I CANNOT BELIEVE SOME OF THE ANSWERS YOU ARE GETTING! ARGH!
No, it is ALWAYS improper for a student and a professor to be in a relationship. There is, and always will be, an imbalance of power. Most reputable universities have regulations prohibiting relationships between professors and students.
However, in this case, it sounds like this is a general invitation to ALL of his students. If you think that meeting him for drinks after class will NOT lead to anything further, then sure, go.
My advice? If you are attracted to him, don't go. If you think he is attracted to you, make sure you are not the ONLY one going.

Yes. It's legal, and if it is not influencing your grade then its all fine since you're both consenting adults. From a professional standpoint though that's pretty dumb of your prof. You wont get much mileage out of this yourself. Is he asking You or the class in general?
Any how it's legal, it's ok, but it can make a mess, make you or him feel awkward in school, influence how you feel about a class etc. In other words, other faculty will frown on it, you cant sue for harassment, and both of you have stuff to lose. If you really like him and want to make a move wait until you're out of his class. Also keep in mind that inviting students to a bar is pretty much a common tradition, I drank with many of my profs and shouldn't necessarily be seen as him asking you out.
Also male profs often date or marry students. As someone else pointed out, if he does intend to be intimate it is likely you're not the only one. And bear in mind this may lower your grade to avoid 'favoritism.' My best advice is wait until you are out of the class, use the attraction to help you focus and care about the material (and he may be flirting for this very reason.)
(PS the attraction may be power based - once you are in another class it may leave)

I don't think there is anything wrong with going out with the prof AND other students...a one-on-one situation might be a little akward until after the semester, but hey...my sis-in-law is married to one of her former professors.

Trust your instincts. If he's always asking students to join him after class, how so you know that you're not the only one he's screwing?

Yeah wait until class is over. What if you get a D on the final? How will you both deal with that?

Yes and No. If it works out, and you actually start dating for several yrs - great! Could be very helpful in your education too!! If not ... well, he would either fail you or give you a bad grade. Pray you only have ONE class with him...
