I know you're going to think I'm a pervert, but I had a gf who had really bad cramps and when nothing seemed to work she said her doctor suggested to try masturbating because the contractions can help relax the muscles and lessen the cramps.

Take an Advil or pain reliever/ibeprofen and the pain should ease in about 10-15 minutes. Also take a warm bath and don't worry about getting clean just relax. Also it does help so yeah you should rub your tummy while the advil kicks in or the tub fills. If the cramps are that bad you can take the pill and your periods will be lighter and shorter but the cramps will go away; if you do do that then you can't stop w/o unbearable pain for a few periods, well for most people at least.
Hope you feel better, Danielle!

Unfortunatly mild - moderate period cramps can be normal. And as a woman in her 40's they never went away for me. Things I found thu discussing this with other females from my grandmother to other women I have had as roomates to coworkers.. Hot herbal teas with ginger helped me some as did a heating pad ( I see those Hot pack things that work for 8 hrs and there are ones for menstral pain) keeping fit can help. Mild to Moderate exercise can help. I had a great friend who was a pharmsist who said to keep your diet low in fat less than 30 percent of your calories should come from fat ever and high in complex carbs good bread ones with oats and whole grains not pasty white or pasty wheat bread you know the stuff like wonder bread or the grocery store suff that goes on sale for 2 for a dollar. I use to treat myself to a cup of hot chochlate made with fat free milk and nesquick or ovaltine the hot milk helps to relax you ( calicum) Also make sure you stay hydrated drink your 8 glasses of milk and exercise not like a crazy nut but 3-5 times a week. AND HAVING A BABY WILL NOT MAKE THE CRAMPS GO AWAY...they made mine worse I mean really bad my gyn felt so bad for me when he saw me with cramps that he gave me narcotics but it was so extreme the last two yrs that I bled it was awful. I would have constipation for three or four days before I would start and with in 12 hrs of the bleeding begining I would have a migrane then I would have diahrea. I went into early menopause yea there is hope it made me really sad cuz I wanted another child but things did not work out that way for me. I was all done with periods at age 43.. How old are you anyway. Have you asked your mother a teacher or school nurse or maybe an older sister or auntie. If your sexually active you need to have a complete exam. And it only takes once to get pregnant or catch a diese you could end up dead from sex just once. Also birthcontrol pills did help me and some of them are marketed that they relive cramps,,, they do lighten the flow and the number of days that you have your period. Another thing that works for some is Midol and I think I mentioned ADVIL OR ALIVE... Best wishes. and welcome to wooman hood..

Personally, I whine a lot! Start taking advil or Aleve a couple of days ahead of time, it will really help. Pamprin works better than Midol for during. When cramps get really bad, skip tampons, it makes it worse. I don't think rubbing my tummy helps. A heating pad, a cup of tea, a cookie and a trashy magazine make me a bit more happy. Also, I don't want to be touched at all and tell my husband to get off of me even if he just looks at me. Hope ya feel better!

Learned this years ago...................at the first twinge, take MIDOL. If you wait, it is too late. What happens is hormones are released when your period starts that cause your uterus to contract to help lose the lining. If you wait till the hormones are released, you are fighting a losing battle. I had cramps that felt like my insides were ripping and after I started taking Midol at the first sign of my period starting, I had them no more.
Make sure that when you know that is period is due that you keep the Midol with you so that you do not lose any time getting them taken. I know we are all different , but Midol worked great for me.

I eat a teaspoon of celery salt.. it helps..and ask my husband to do a back rub... and sip hot tea.. also going for a walk.. helps me to forget the pain..

but to decrease ur cramps in future try.. doing light excercises 3 times a week each week.. taking breaks while u are on ur period..
avoid.. anything that is cold and avoid taking milk products during period..

rubbing your tummy? I guess for some ppl it might work, but take ibuprofen and use an ice pack, like for your lunch or a heating pad. Avoid icecream and dairy becasue those make my cramps alot worse.

take midol
or motrin/aspirin (any type of painkiller)
and yes, rubbing your tummy can help at times
and you can take a warm heating pad and put it on your back or your stomach, that always helps
and try lying down in a firm place- like the floor. that helps alot!

Take some Tylenol and put heat on your abdomen. A heating pad works wonders.
