I usually let them float for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then I take a little bit of the tank water and pour it in the bag so the new fish can gradually get used to the different water. Always make sure you don't pour the water from the bag into your tank because there could be parasites in the new fishies water that you definitely don't want to infect your tank with such as ich, etc. You can also purchase a liquid at any pet store that will reduce the stress on introducing new fish into your tank. Good Luck!

generally, until both have the same temperature, the water in the bag, and the tank water. Since heat dissipates to cold..tropical fish might require a little more time than non tropical...the water in the bag will most likely be lower temp than the water in the tank. about 15 minutes-non tropical, maybe 20 minutes for tropical. just to be safe, treat the fish as if during a regular transfer for tank cleaning.Want an improvised timer? put an ice cube in a glass of room-temp water...when the ice has melted, you're pretty safe to open the bag

New Fish In Tank

A half-hour or so should be fine.

The reason for doing it is to gradually equalize the temperature of the water in the bag with the water in the tank. That way, the fish will feel more comfortable when he swims into his new home.

5-10 Min's then let some water in the bag while leaving the fish in there for another 5 Min's just to get the fish use to the water

You do that so the water that the fish is in gets to be the same temp as the tank and you don't shock the fish. About a half hour to an hour should do it.

only between 15 to 20 minutes..that's so the fish gets used to the temperature in your tank.

you need to leave any new fish floating in the bag until they become accustomed to the new temperature i would say a couple of hours

Actually - what works better (if the ambient tempurature is what you rely upon to maintain your tank's temp) is to simply get yourself about a 5g bucket. Put your new fish in the water they came into in that bucket, and then begin to add half as much as they are currently in - into that bucket, and do this for a period of 30 to 60 minutes (this gives them a chance to acclimate to your water parameters - pH, and other levels).

Just until the bag water reaches the same temperature and the tank water. I would say an hour.
