The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was unanimously adopted by the United Nations in 1948. Both the United States and Canada were members of the United Nations at that time. Despite their adoption of the Universal Declaration, it does not in and of itself bind the states that have adopted it. Selections of the Universal Declaration, however, are adopted in numerous binding treaties.
