I heard today that Walmart was going to discontinue their Layaway program. As of November 19, 2006 you can no longer layaway any merchandise at Walmart. Is this true? What about Christmas and parents who want to put things in layaway for their kids? What if anything do you think?

Since a lot of people who shop at Walmart can be rude, can you imagine how they are going to react to this? I pray for the poor people who work there.

It is true that Wal-Mart is going to discontinue the Layaway Program. I have friends and family that work there. There will be no "Christmas" layaways this year. Only the normal layaways will be available. When that Layaways are supposed to be out for Christmas, that will be the last.

I do not like it. Wal-Mart Layaway is my closet. I do not have anywhere to put my kids Birthday or Christmas stuff. This really sucks!

K-mart is here for layaways, but stuff there costs more and you have to pay $10.00 plus 10% of your layaway. This is going to cost the shoppers alot of money.

Heard the same thing down here, the layaway program uses a lot of space that could be used for backup merchandise. Really if you think of it the layaway program only forces you to save money! You can actually do it on your own, and shop around when the sales are going on! You do not have sales early enough to actually pay for something on layaway. If you have a job have your employer take a little bit more out for savings just for Christmas, you will never miss it! If you can open a sub account to your savings account at the bank and force yourself to save just a little each payday whatever it is, you will have money that you can spent SAY AFTER CHRISTMAS when all the stores are selling everything or on Christmas Eve night, when every store has super sales!

Try to be your own finance department. Force yourself, think if you could layaway something then you do not have to have a store make extra money just to hold something to MAKE YOU SAVE when you can do it on your OWN and save lots of money!

Good Luck ,You Do Not Need The Crutch Of Layaway!

To those who say its just for people that are buying things they cannot afford. Do you have a credit card? Do you have a car payment? Do you have a house payment? Do not hate on people just because they chose the store itself as a method of credit. And like other have said, it was a good way to store things. I would put my kids stuff in layaway every christmas so I did not have to hide it.

Also, for those who say its about them abandonning the customers...you did not read the part of the article that stated they were going to create other credit options that did not include keeping the items in the store. That was the big reason. They have to pay people to organize and track the layaway as well as take up storage room that could be used for mechandise to restock the floor. I used to work at wal-mart and my ex still does. Every year, during christmas season, they have to rent trailers for layaway storage.

Layaway used to be a way for people to pay for stuff that they couldn't afford right now over a longer period of time. But now they are using it as a storage more than what it is intended for (especially during X-Mas). I think they made the change because of the people who abuse the program. So we should blame those people who have taken advantage. Not only that but credit is available to just about everyone in some way shape or form. The Layaway program is kind of outdated.

Yeah its true i have a friend that works at Walmart but I think here in Mississippi we have until the end of this year right now they are only doing 30 day layaways then they're gonna cut it out completely after Christmas.

Walmart is so large they are not really concerned about what people think or do... Layaway is an expense to the stores for holding merchandise over prolonged periods of time... Don't be surprised if other stores follow suite.

I haven't heard this, but It wouldn't surprise me.either. That would be around their usual cut off dates for x-mas anyway. Maybe that's what it is. On the other hand, no layaways would mean more stuff on the shelves for sale. I rarely shop there because of their poor quality meat and produce and clothing. In my case, I have the option of K-Mart(a miracle) and Meijer's , which offers high quality, affordable merchandise and constantly is in a price war with Wal-mart.

That's not good. Not alot of stores are doing layaway anymore and now Walmart isn't either? What a disappointment!

It was strictly a business decision to help with their profits. I hope no one really thought Walmart cared about the people who need the layaway service.

you can still do the christmas layaways for this year....as of november 19th, you can no longer lay away anything...but you have until mid-december to pick up anything that is there...after that they are done...i think it's a mistake, myself. the area that i live in (west virginia) is kind of a poor area, and some people really depend on laying away stuff and paying on it....i guess they will have to open up a christmas club or something instead....
