In most states it is 4 years or a specific amount of credits (units based on the number of course requirements). Your state may also require things like community service hours. There are also specific tests which need to be passed in order to recieve a diploma.

the american high school diploma represents at least 12 years of educational experience (some people can cram their 12 years of experience into less than 12 years and some people can take more than 12 years to get it)

"high school" can be defined differently in every school system

individual towns can have individual definitions

I have seen 2, 3, and 4 year "high schools"

In the town in new jersey where I grew up 9th grade was part of junior high and there were only three grades at the "high school"

most commonly and traditionally however, high school includes four grades, freshman, sophomore, junior, senior

Usually it is four year. But you can graduate in three years or fewer if you can get all the credits necessary for graduation in time.

some high schools are only 10 through 12 others are 9 through 12...so i'd say both.
